Everything business travelers need to know about the new laptop ban

Everything business travelers need to know about the new laptop banEverything business travelers need to know about the new laptop banIts going to be a lot more difficult to travel from certain countries the U.S. and U.K. with common electronics.Think of all the distractionary devices travelers bring on plans to finish work, watch movies, and listen to music laptops, tablets, and even oversized phablet size cell phones as well as cameras and e-readers like the Kindle.None of the electronics are allowed on carry-on luggage or in airplane cabins any more in flights from certain airports and on certain airlines. Both the U.S. and U.K. announced that all travelers - regardless of citizenship - who pass through a select group of Middle Eastern airports will have to check all those electronics into their luggage. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced yesterday that travelers passing through the 10 airports, which include Cairo, Dubai, Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, will now face more s trict guidelines due to an evaluated threat on airline attacks through personal electronics. The US was not alone- the UK also announced similar security measures that affected several domestic airlines including regional ones like EasyJet and Thomas Cook. The sudden, sweeping measure was so alarming to some professionals that the New York Times even came up with a list of ways to keep your personal information safe. Its advice befitting James Bond Some of the more elaborate measures including writing down passwords on a piece of paper that you would hand to a friend you will meet over the border. The rules go into effect this week. So before you leave for any zwischenstaatlich business trips, make sure youre clear on where the US and UK ?and maybe even Canada) now stand on bringing electronic items back. Why is the laptop ban happening now?We note that disseminated propaganda from various terrorist groups is encouraging attacks on aviation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said on its official website.Such attacks have happened before, including deadly mass killings by terrorists in the major airports of Brussels and Istanbul. The agency also pointed to events including the 2015 airliner downing in Egypt, the 2016 attempted airliner downing in Somalia, and further stated that evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation, to include smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items.Which airports will force you to check your laptops and tablets? The Department of Homeland Security said that these are the ones impactedQueen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan Cairo International Airport Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, Morocco Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, Dubai International Airport Abu Dhabi International Airport, King Abdul-Aziz International Airport in Jedda, Saudi Arabia King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Kuwai t International Airport. One important thing to note the restrictions apply even if youre flying through those airports on your way to another destination. So if youre traveling across the world and your flight has a stopover in Cairo or Istanbul, plan accordingly.Which airlines will stop you from taking a laptop on board? The U.S. has imposed the new rules on several Middle Eastern airlines including Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates Etihad Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and Saudia. The U.K. ban will also affect Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian and Saudia and adds Atlas-Global Airways, Pegasus Airways, Tunisair, British Airways, EasyJet, Jet 2, Thomas Cook, Thomson and Monarch airlines.Be sure to check your airlines electronic travel restrictions before heading to the US or UK from one of the countries listed. How are the airlines reacting?Emirates updated their ad with Jennifer Aniston to talk about the ban, asking who needs lap tops and tablets anyway?https//www.youtube.com/watch?v=as6ZEuo0IrERoyal Jordanian, for another, landseems to be exhibiting some humor about it in a series of tweets. What devices are allowed on these international flights now?The type of device is not as important as its size. The rule is that any electronic devices bigger than 6.3 inches long by 3.6 inches wide have to be checked. That includes laptops, large cellphones, Kindles and other e-book readers, portable DVD players, video-game consoles and cameras as well as travel printers or scanners. The DHS will maintain discretion over which devices are allowed, however, meaning the type of device could grow or shrink. An exception approved medical devices may be brought into the cabin after additional screening, according to the Department of Homeland Security. How long the ban on laptops in airplane cabins will lastThe U.S. Department of Homeland Security says the measures will last indefinitely, until the terror threat level changes. In the UK, we understand the frustration that these measures may cause and we are working with the aviation industry to minimise any impact. Our top priority will always be to maintain the safety of British nationals. These new measures apply to flights into the UK and we are not currently advising against flying to and from those countries, a written statementto Parliament said. Will other countries join the ban?Canada might. The Globe and Mail reported that Canadas Transport Minister, Marc Garneau, is analyzing information given to him by the United States to see if the country should also make people flying from the Middle East to Canada store all large electronic devices other than mobile cellphones in their checked luggage.Reportedly, U.S. Homeland Secretary John Kelly talked to Garneau over the phone yesterday about why theUS created its new policy, and Garneau told reporters that he made us aware of a situation that we are analyzing very carefully. We will have a fulsome discussi on within government and look at the information that has been presented to us and then we will make a decision, and is vowing to have the government act expeditiously.Whether or not Canada joins the US and UK in instating a more restrictive electronics policy when it comes to flights, it is clear that the way we travel for work is rapidly changing.

Elevators Join the Green Bandwagon

Elevators Join the Green Bandwagon Elevators Join the Green Bandwagon Elevators have come a long way since Elisha Graves Otis invented a safety device in 1853 that made lifting devices a practical reality for public use. His invention prevented an elevator from falling should a cable break. Today, a major focus on elevator improvement is on design and environment-friendliness. We are definitely seeing an increased demand for the latest green technologies, says Mary Ryan, senior product manager for new equipment in North America for Otis Elevator Co. She says the most recent developments involve reducing energy consumption while offering a smooth, quiet ride and greater design freedom even though the industry has made continuous improvements over the years in designing elevators that are more energy efficient, cleaner, and more compact than ever. Machine-Roomless Elevators The latest major innovation in elevator technology came in the 1990s with the introduction of machine-roomless el evators, or MRLs, which allow most of the components to fit within the shaft where the car runs. Only a small cabinet houses the elevator controller. MRLs also save on construction and operational costs. Unlike conventional elevators (left), the Otis Hydrofit elevator (right) does not require a machine room. Image source Otis.com In addition to Otis, most other major elevator manufacturers, including Kone Corp, Schindler Elevator, and ThyssenKrupp Elevator, have developed their own versions of MRLs for the U.S. market, although the technology has been in use in Europe longer than in the U.S. This has been due to the time it has taken to align U.S. building codes and regulations with the new technology and new designs. John Sellen, project manager for Lerch Bates Inc., an international elevator consulting firm, has seen the industry make much progress in his more than 30 years working in the industry, including at ThyssenKrupp Elevator, Dover Elevator, and Fujitec Elevator. According to Sellen, MRLs are replacing traditional geared traction elevators that have dominated the mid-rise elevator market from five to 15 floors for over 50 years and is also making a dent in the market for higher-rise hydraulic elevators. The gearless machine-roomless elevator segment is the fastest growing segment in North America as people move to greener technology and away from hydraulic elevators. Right now, it is about one-third of the market and continues to grow steadily, says Ryan. Energy Consumption Otis latest versions, Gen2 and HydroFit systems, do not require a machine room or a control room, which means significant space savings. At the same time, these latest systems are designed to minimize energy consumption, Ryan says. For example, the Gen2 systems standard ReGen drive captures energy normally wasted as heat and feeds it back to the buildings electric grid for use by other systems. Gen2 models reduce energy consumption by up to 75%, aided by using LED lighting and an automatic sleep mode for lights and fans to increase efficiency. In an article for Reed Construction Data, Bill Glas, product manager for Schindler Elevator, writes that although each MRL elevator manufacturer has slightly different variations, the motors generally use up to 40% less energy than more traditional geared traction motors and because the motors are smaller, they generate less heat, further reducing the HVAC load. There are good reasons for the growth of this segment, Glas says. Specifying and installing MRL elevators offer tangible advantages for everyonethe design community, the environment, users, and owners. Nancy Giges is an independent writer. The machine-roomless elevator elevator has evolved to become a self-contained system that uses up to 75% less energy than conventional systems.Mary Ryan, senior product manager, Otis Elevator Co.

The Ron Swanson Guide to Job Searching

The Ron Swanson Guide to Job SearchingThe Ron Swanson Guide to Job Searching may be off the air, but our favorite curmudgeon Ron Swanson will never be forgotten. As the director of the parks department on the hit TV show, Ron Swansons disdain for, well, most everything and everyone doesnt make him seem like an inspirational source for job searching guidance. However, while an unlikely candidate, lets look at a few of Rons best quips and pick out the lessons we can learn through his cranky, yet hilarious, point of viewThe Ron Swanson Guide to Job SearchingI just want to get the work over as soon as possible so I can do some fishing. Fishing relaxes me. Its like yoga except I still get to kill something. The lesson Allow time for what you love. Job searching can be like having a full-time job. The constant searching, applying, and interviewing can feel endless. Take a cue from Ron and get outdoors or get active to release some stress. Its also not a bad idea to search for a flexible job to allow time for what you love. When people get a little too chummy with me I like to call them by the wrong name to let them know I dont really care about them. The lesson Make koranvers you know the name of who youre talking to When youre job searching and writing multiple titel letters, it can be easy to write the wrong name of the HR director or hiring manager. When youre interviewing, it can be easy to forget the interviewers name, or worse yet, call them by the wrong name. Unlike Ron, you do not want a potential boss to think you dont careGive 100%. 110% is impossible. Only idiots recommend that. The lesson Dont overdo it in your job search. Think quality over quantity. Applying to every job you come across might seem like itll up your chances of getting hired, but all it will do is exhaust you. Apply to what you are qualified for and passionate about. Put 100 percent into those applications and the hiring managers will be sure to see your effort.Be proud of yourself. You deser ve an award. Not this one, obviously. This one belongs to me. But some other one. Some other lesser award. The lesson Be proud of your job searching diligence. Reward yourself for small victories to motivate yourself. If others around you are getting new jobs or youve been rejected for jobs youve applied to, it may feel like youre getting the lesser award. Dont beat yourself up. Your award- a job- will come in time.Crying acceptable at funerals and the Grand Canyon. The lesson Dont get down about rejection. Wed like to think even Ron Swanson would be a little down about rejection. It hurts even the toughest of characters. Allow yourself to feel your emotions, but keep things in check. A negative or over-the-top reaction will only hinder your job search.Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing. The lesson Put your all into sending out quality resumes and cover letters for a select amount of jobs. Dont haphazardly send out weak applications for many jobs. Prioritize your job search above other things. Sure, you want to watch a few TV episodes and spend only 20 minutes applying to jobs, but a single focus on job searching is what you need to succeed.Teamwork. Very important. Equally important, selfishness. Take whats yoursThe lesson Believe that youre the best person for the job. Sure, in your normal life you put others before yourself. Your self sacrifice would impress most and probably make Ron Swanson roll his eyes. But when youre job searching and interviewing, a little selfishness may be needed. Do all that you can to show a hiring manager that you are the most qualified and take that jobReaders, what would you add to the Ron Swanson guide to job searching? Any other pieces of wisdom you can glean from his musings?

What if work software were designed to make you happy

What if work software were designed to make you happyWhat if work software were designed to make you happyIts 9 a.m. on a Monday morning, and I log into my project management software to review my work for the week. I immediately see what I was working on last and where my team members have made progress- all of their contributions marked with their names and pictures. I laugh when I read a colleagues latest comments I can imagine her voice, and it feels as though she is right here with me, sharing a coffee, rather than miles away in a different time zone. Can software make you happy? Somehow I derive a modest amount of joy from the project management software I use. Very often, though, the software makes us feel bored, isolated, or even angry. How do some technologies manage to give us feelings of joy, pride, or connection, while others do not?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThi s isnt just an academic question. Most of us are spending more time than ever using technology, particularly at work In aMcKinsey report, Michael Chui and his colleaguespoint out that in the modern work environment, managers and professionals spend an average of 28 hurs each week interacting with media and technology. Instead of feeling dull, unpleasant, or downright frustrating, what if ansicht interactions could actually foster positive emotions? ur dozens of hours of weekly screen time would be transformed into opportunities to elevate our mood and sense of well-being- and thus elevate the emotional tone of our daily lives. There are numerous formal workplace wellness programs that aim to increase employees physical and emotional well-being and make their work feel meaningful by adding something to the day, like meditation. As effective as they may be, they do little to make the everyday tasks were already doing- checking email, working on spreadsheets, writing text- more healthy, meaningful, or even joyful. So where does software fit in? Our team at the Information Experience and Design Research Group at Stuttgart Media University believes that we should actively design software products to foster a more positive nutzer experience (UX) whenever people interact with them. That way, no matter what else people do- whether or not they are actively working on their own well-being or have access to a wellness program- the technologies they use will be quietly supporting happy, positive experiences rather than detracting from them.Six types of positive user experiencesAccording to researcherMarc Hassenzahl, the UX of a product is good when the user feels positive while interacting with it. And the user feels good when his psychological needs are fulfilled, including the human need to feel capable, free, and close to others. To build positive experiences at work, one approach is toask peopleabout the positive experiences theyre already having offline, and then use th is knowledge to create new experiences in a digital context. We interviewed about 400 participants of different ages and occupations, including students, engineers, landscape gardeners, teachers, personal trainers, military servicemen, social workers, and retirees, about their experiences at work. They told us about 350 positive experiences they had, which we then analyzed to see whether we could find any underlying patterns.Ouranalysisrevealed 17 different categories of positive experiences at work that, in turn, can be clustered into six themes. When technology is designed according to these categories, this creates more possibilities for positive experiences during our daily work routines. Here are thesix types of positive user experiences.1. Resonance Receiving feedback, giving feedback, and receiving appreciation. We all know how good it feels when we dont just work in a vacuum but receive feedback about our efforts. Then, we feel seen and useful- particularly if the feedback is positive. Feedback strengthens our sense that we can succeed and fulfills our psychological need to feel competent.Software can easily provide feedback about what we have achieved, and research suggests that getting feedback on your progress during a computer task feels good and helps you concentrate more. For example, in a software designing class we taught, one group of students designed a video reel that would show the user his last 50 actions in a 3D design program. Reels like this are used in video games to make gamers feel pride in their performance. When the 3D software users see the video reel, they might experience a similar feeling of pride and motivation as they return to work on a project.Gratitudeis one specific kind of positive feedback we get from others, which helps build and maintain our relationships, and it can also be incorporated into software. For example, in cooperation with a CRM company, we createddesign conceptsto improve the UX of their content management software. This included a feature allowing users to send a quick thank you to their coworkers to appreciate their cooperation.2. Social support Helping others, receiving help, and teaching others.Compared toresonance, social supportrefers to the positive experiences on the two sides of a supportive interaction, such as helping or teaching. Being asked for help or being able to give good advice makes us feelproudand valuable.Software can offer us opportunities to help and teach. In cooperation with a software company, we worked on improving the user experience of their distribution software. In the existing version of the software, salespeople could store information about current and potential customers whom they interact with repeatedly. We included a function where they could enter informal information about the customers- like their hobbies, how many children they have, or their upcoming travel. Rather than just uploading all their knowledge about a customer into a database (wher e it would disappear into the abyss), the salespeople could share it to help colleagues who might visit this customer in the future.3. Challenge Being given a challenge and rising to a challenge.Rising to a challenge feels good when a task is demanding but still manageable. Software can support complex and demanding tasks by providing all the information and functionality required, so that we can focus on problem-solving. This does not mean that software should be designed so it is deliberately hard to use and poses a challenge in itself, but rather that it allows the user to notice that they have risen to a challenge.4. Engagement Solving a problem and experiencing creativity. We feel good when our minds are fully engaged, working intensely until we find a solution or coming up with new and creative ideas. This kind of deep work is something that software can support. For example, if were working on a difficult task, it might not be easy to find an optimal solution on our first try. Software can allow for multiple versions and plans, so that ideas can change and evolve without early attempts being lost forever. Ultimately, users can choose the best alternative from the different saved options.Several prototyping tools support this by autosaving changes in different versions. This is a case where a feature that was designed to do something completely different (to store information and to ensure that no information gets lost) can support new types of experiences- allowing the user to take risks, explore, and try things out because they know their changes to a piece of code, a text document, or an image will not be irreversible.5. Organization Finishing a task and keeping track of things.Have you ever finished a task and felt lost or overwhelmed, unsure what to turn to next? Our research suggests that people have positive experiences when software allow them to keep an overview of an entire project and how their current tasks fit into it.Indeed, when we interview ed the users of a project management tool, we found that one positive experience for project managers was to file away completed tasks. To support this experience, one idea might be to have software illustrate completed tasks in the form of a tower that gets higher with every checked-off item.6. Communication and new experiences Connecting with others, exchanging ideas, experiencing something new, creating something together, and contributing to something greater.Feeling like we belong in a team or a company isimportantto our sense of meaningfulness at work, and we have found that technology can support this, as well. For the 3D simulation program, we developed a way to show users that they were working together to contribute to something greater. Inour design, when engineers open the program, they see on the screen how many other engineers are using their 3D model and where they are located. Our studies showed that this gave the engineers a greater feeling of meaning. The ethics of positive UXThe aim of designing for a positive UX in workplace technology is to help people have fulfilling experiences when they interact with it. But is positive UX just a way for employers to manipulate people into working longer hours, or for corporations to keep us addicted to their technology?Of course, we believe that positive UX should be used to boost peoples happiness, not for these other purposes. The main focus is the positive feeling users have when completing work tasks. Nevertheless, that positive feeling may havecertain side effects- like people working faster because the design supports their concentration, people being more loyal to certain products, or people spending more time at work if it becomes more gratifying (so they feel less urge to escape from unpleasant, frustrating technology).Designing for positive UX in professional software can help plant the seeds for a new way of thinking about how we design workplaces and working conditions in general. Some peopl e are already exploring similar ideas under the framework ofPositive Design- designing products to help people make berzeugtheit von sich selbst decisions, experience positive emotions, and pursue their personal goals- andPositive Computing- designing computers to support psychological well-being and human potential.Positive approaches like these mean moving away from a focus on efficiency to put human well-being front and center. We spend so much time at work, and work is an essential source of our self-image and self-confidence, not to mention our livelihood. But professional software- compared to many apps and games we use in our leisure time- puts much less emphasis on creating positive user experiences. Why cant this part of our lives be engaging, pleasurable, and meaningful, too? This article first appeared on The Greater Good.

Sales Job Interview Tips Kenneth Sundheim, President of the sales and marketing search firm KAS Placement, shares his tips below on how to successfully get hired for a sales job. Would You Buy It? Prior to interviewing for a sales job, always ask yourself if you would buy the product or service. In sales, just as in life, you cant sell something that you dont believe in. Also, never take a sales job if you dont have confidence in the marketing department (if applicable) or the current marketing structure and tools. A poorly written, poorly programmed website makes for a hard sell, especially if your competitors have new ones. Be Prepared for Rejection Understand that in sales, just like in job searching, there is going to be rejection. This point is especially aimed at the younger employment seeker who is thinkingabout a career in sales. If you want to do sales, do it. Once you get past your first few rejections and your first few botched cold-calls, it becomes second nature. Dont let shyness or fear of rejection stop you from entering the field. Its an amazing way to begin your career. Focus on Consultative Sales Skills Remember that sales employers always want somebody who has what is most commonly referred to as a consultative selling approach. More or less, the term refers to a sales style that aims to uncover the clients needs as opposed to the infamous sales style portrayed in the film Glengarry Glen Ross, which was most famously known for the mentality that, regardless of what the client wants or is best for them, close the deal. To express this unethical sales methodology in both an entertaining and theatrical manner, playwright David Mamet scripted the infamous A.B.C. or always be closing line. The Employer Is Your Partner Salary negotiationis the 1 most difficult aspect of the job searchfor many applicants in the sales and marketing arena. If you are not trained in negotiation, use what we refer to as the work with method. It means having the mentality that the employer is your partner, not your adversar y, and together your job is to work towards a solution that will have you employed by the firm. If you think of negotiation in terms of winners and losers, youre going to end up the latter.

3 Situations When Its OK to Say No to Your Boss

3 Situations When It's OK to Say No to Your Boss 3 Situations When It's OK to Say No to Your Boss Whether you have a great boss or an overly demanding one, you’ll most likely land in a scenario where you’re asked to do something you don’t want to do. Maybe your manager will ask you to tackle a lowly administrative task you feel is beneath you. Or maybe you’ll be summoned to a meeting you have no desire to attend. Saying no to your boss is hardly easy, and often, it actually isn’t warranted. After all, just because you loathe doing paperwork doesn’t give you the right to avoid it. And while you might consider meetings a drag, that doesn’t let you off the hook, attendance-wise. But there are some situations where saying no is perfectly reasonable. Here are just a few. We all work late from time to time, and many of us work late more often than not. If the latter is a common practice at your company, you’ll probably have a hard time saying no most of the time. But that doesn’t mean you can’t ever push back. At some point, your manager has to realize that you’re a person with responsibilities, obligations and interests outside of the office. And if you’re never given a chance to be a person, you’re going to burn out very quickly. So if your boss requests that you stay late for what will end up being the fourth or fifth night in a row, politely but firmly explain that you have personal items to tend to that you can no longer put off, and since you’ve spent the better part of the week working late, you need a night to yourself. Any reasonable manager will understand where you’re coming from. And if yours doesn’t, it may be a sign that it’s time to find a new job. It’s a good thing to be busy at work, because it means that your company clearly needs you around. But there comes a point when you can only handle so much of a load, so if your manager asks you to tackle a new project and you’re already clocking in 50 hours a week or more, you shouldn’t hesitate to respectfully decline. If you explain to your boss that your overall performance will suffer if you’re forced to spread yourself too thin, with any luck, they will understand. And if not, try masking a no with an alternate proposal along the lines of, “Which of my current tasks would you like me to unload to take on this new one?” There’s a difference between checking your email every so often while away and spending hours at your laptop during what’s supposed to be a vacation week. If your boss requests that you do the latter, you have every right to refuse -  politely, of course. Chances are, you’ve paid quite the premium to get away, and as long as you made a point to tackle your pressing projects and train a backup before heading out of the office, you have every right to enjoy that trip to the fullest, without interruptions. If your boss isn’t the respectful type and insists that you jump in on a given task, you can always play the spotty internet card. Just make sure to stay off social media so your manager doesn’t find out and call your bluff. It’s natural to want to please your boss, but the last thing you want to do is risk your personal life and sanity in an effort to boost your reputation. So if you happen to land in any of the above scenarios, don’t be shy about speaking up for yourself. You may come to find that it actually helps your career in the long run. 3 reasons aspiring executives need a degree in tech management

3 reasons aspiring executives need a degree in tech management 3 reasons aspiring executives need a degree in tech management You may think digital transformation doesn’t apply to your industry. Think again. According to McKinsey, 70% of businesses will attempt a digital transformation, yet only 30% will succeed. Why do so many otherwise successful companies fail to adapt to the tech-driven world? Chief among many factors is the digital skills gap impacting 54% of businesses. Most traditional business education programs simply haven’t kept pace with today’s technological demands, causing individuals who already have an MBA to seek out programs to learn more applied and specific digital skills. I’ve seen this trend first-handâ€" 30% of students in the Executive MS in Technology Management at Columbia University came in with an MBA already on their resume.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In a dynamic marketplace where tech is king, I believe an Executive MS in Technology Management is the new must-have degree for business executives seeking to further their professional development. This is not to say the MBA is obsolete. The degree still has broad value in the business world, especially if you’re just starting a career. But due to the inseparable nature of technology and business, there is an urgent need to supplement MBAs with education and theories that can be applied to the current digital reality. If you’re an executive seeking continuing education, here are three reasons you should pursue a degree in tech management. It’s not just for tech companiesAll industries have to leverage technology to survive, not just the Amazons of the world. Across 15 industries, ranging from manufacturing to energy, 47% of CEOs are challenged to make progress in digital business, according to a study from Gartner. Increasing efficiency â€" and profit â€" is the key driver. That same study found 56% of executives say digital improvements have already increased their profits. An Execu tive MS in Tech Management provides students with the tools to increase a company’s bottom line. Programs emphasize the importance of using technology in business for strategic advantage and improved productivity.Graduates typically assume such positions as CIOs, CTOs, CAOs, COOs, CEOs, CSOs, or CDOs. Steve Bandrowczak was named President and COO of Xerox while taking our program at Columbia University. Lauren Goodwin earned her Executive MS and was hired as BP’s VP of Digital Transformation.Programs are specified to your needsExecutives like Steve and Lauren succeeded because what they learned was specific to their needs. Digital transformation is not a one-size-fits-all process, so programs offer a variety of focus areas, such as C-Level Management, Cybersecurity and Data Management, and Analytics. Executives can leverage this expertise to reach the next level in their careers.Matthew Smith was a student at Columbia University’s program. As a lead architect for a digital tra nsformation initiative at ATT, he chose a focus in Digital and Business Transformation. Within a month of beginning our program, Matt’s responsibilities at his company increased. He later accepted a position with a leading global consulting firm as a Senior Business and Integration Architect, a job that came with a pay raise of 35%.Mentors share real-world experienceFor every Netflix, there’s a Blockbuster that was too slow to adapt to digital trends. Since 2000, over 50% of Fortune 500 companies have been acquired, merged, or declared bankruptcy.Individualized mentoring from an executive who has successfully led a digital transformation can help you lead your company to success instead of becoming another statistic. Unfortunately, legal issues sometimes prevent executives from getting one-on-one advice from CEOs or other leading technology executives. This is not the case with Executive MS programs, where students benefit from one-on-one mentorships with a top-level executive. T he aforementioned Matthew Smith credited mentor David Widup, a former executive and Principal at N. Allen Associates, LLC, with helping him understand the intersection of business and technology.I’ve seen growing interest in Columbia’s Executive MS program since its launch, a testament to the demands of digital transformation. With every business needing to integrate technology into its operations and an increasingly large digital skills gap, expert knowledge in technology can help keep you and your business from falling behind. I encourage aspiring C-Suite executives to consider degrees that will make them indispensable leaders for tomorrow.By Dr. Art Langer  is the Academic Director of Technology Management at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies and Director of the Center for Technology Management at Columbia University. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Heres How to Stand Out as a Campus Recruit -The Muse

Heres How to Stand Out as a Campus Recruit -The Muse Heres How to Stand Out as a Campus Recruit It might feel like you have a lot of time before you graduate from college, but trust us, it’s going to go really fast. Before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage and moving your tassel from one side of your cap to the other. But before you don your cap and gown and make your family proud, we’re willing to bet you’re thinking about how to secure your first post-grad job. We won’t sugar coat it, getting that first job takes work. But there’s a silver lining- you may not have to travel too far to begin your search. Many colleges offer opportunities for companies to recruit new hires and interns right on campus. No matter what, though, one fact still remains: There’ll be thousands of other college seniors looking for their first real-world gig, too. So you want to make sure you get noticed (and hired). Here’s how to stand out as an on-campus recruit. 1. Polish Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile First things first- you need to get your materials in order. Recruiters expect you to have both a resume and LinkedIn profile so if you don’t have both (or either), prioritize putting those together. Don’t know where to start? Here are some great resume templates and some tips on building a stellar LinkedIn profile. Make sure they both adequately represent your education and experience- including part-time jobs, internships, and volunteer work- and are uncluttered and easy to read. Also, remember to spell check each thoroughly and have a clear, professional-looking photo for LinkedIn. Once you feel like you’re in a good spot, don’t be afraid to seek out feedback at your career center (most offer this service for free!), or to ask your peers and mentors for their thoughts. Gathering the opinions of others before you send your resume out into the world can save you from wondering, “Why didn’t I get a response?” 2. Leverage Your Career Center If you haven’t set foot in your college's career center yet, what are you waiting for? Career centers are a great, often untapped, resource. The career counselors there can answer your questions, review your resume, and connect you with the right people. So schedule an appointment, but come prepared. Start brainstorming a list of questions, like: How do I find out when companies will be recruiting on campus? How do I schedule an interview with one of those companies? Then have an idea of what industry you’re interested in, and bring your updated resume and cover letter with you to the meeting. The career counselors will not only be able to provide feedback, but direction on how to begin a successful job search. And don’t feel self conscious about question overload- that’s what they’re there for. 3. Start to Prepare Once you’ve become a familiar face in the career center, and with their help maybe even scheduled an interview or two, it’s time to get the prep work started. Make sure you arrive promptly, look professional, and do your homework. This advice applies to video and remote interviews, too. You'll still want to look professional and be prompt, which means you need to test the video conferencing tool (Google Hangout, Skype, Zoom, etc.) beforehand to make sure it works and you know how to use it. Research the interviewer and the company on the company website and LinkedIn. Being informed will go a long way in making a good impression. And make sure you’ve got your own elevator pitch prepared. Think about what two or three sentences summarize who you are, what kind of job you’re looking for, and why you’d be a great hire. Some career centers even offer mock interviews, so make sure you take advantage of that before the big day. And remember, not everything during the interview needs to be job-related. You could spend part of the conversation chatting about the latest binge-worthy Netflix show, for example. The point is, you’re making a personal connection that’s more likely to leave a lasting impression. Plus, these fun little details are great content for when you follow up (see #5). 4. Ask Thoughtful Questions Whether you have an interview or you’re just chatting with a company representative, make sure you spend time asking questions that’ll help you better understand the organization and the people who work there. These types of questions help both sides figure out whether it’s a good match. Some examples of thoughtful questions are: Can you tell me more about the company's mission? What does the company do to achieve its mission? What types of characteristics make a successful employee here? What's a challenge the company faces? What's your favorite part about working here? You might not have enough time to ask all of these questions. Campus recruiting events can be crowded and you won’t control the interview agenda. So pick the two that matter most to you and try to work those into the conversation. 5. Send a Follow-Up This is where you can really shine. Even if you make a good impression, you’re still one in a crowd of many. But repeated exposure will increase the likelihood of someone remembering you. A week after you meet someone, reach out via email or LinkedIn (or if they gave you a card, whatever method is listed there). Not everyone will respond, so try to follow up with as many people as you can, saying something like: Hi Luke, We met at the [INSERT COLLEGE] on [INSERT DATE]. I hope you're having a great day and have had a chance to catch up on the latest episode of [insert previously discussed Netflix show]. I really enjoyed talking to you about [INSERT COMPANY NAME]. I'd love to chat more about the company and your experience. Would you be willing to grab coffee or chat with me on the phone for 10 to 15 minutes sometime in the next few weeks? Let me know when you get a chance. Thanks, [INSERT NAME] And if you want to reach out to someone who interviewed you, you can also try one of these follow up tactics. Bottom line: If you want to stand out, you need to put in the work. But if you take advantage of your career center, attend on-campus recruiting events, and make a lasting impression, you’ll be adulting in no time.

Thank You Letter for a Social Work Job Interview

Thank You Letter for a Social Work Job Interview Thank You Letter for a Social Work Job Interview After a job interview, it̢۪s important to follow up immediately, while the meeting is still fresh in your mind. That way you can seize the opportunity to solidify your interest and qualifications with the hiring manager. Your thank you letter for a social work job should convey your appreciation for the interview and reiterate your most relevant qualifications for the job. How to Send Your Thank You You can send your letter or note via post, email, or attachment. A business letter should be formatted correctly, and include your contact information, the date, and the hiring manager̢۪s contact information at the top. An email business letter also needs to follow specific conventions, beginning with the subject line, so the importance of the content is clear. The subject should include both your full name and the proper title of the position you interviewed for. What to Write The tone and content of your thank you note will be the same whether you are sending it by mail or email. It should be concise, professional, and free of any typos, abbreviations, or slang. Begin with an appropriate salutation, followed by the body of your letter. In the body of your thank you letter, you should express appreciation for the time the interviewer spent with you, and their consideration of your application for the job. You can take the opportunity to reinforce some of your strongest qualifications for the position, mention anything important you omitted during your interview, and let them know of your strong interest in the job. Concrete examples or anecdotes can help illustrate what an asset you would be, and why they should hire you. Your conclusion will sum up your skills and interest in the position, and reiterate your thanks for their time and consideration. You should make clear that you welcome additional questions, and you can mention if you plan to follow up at a certain time. Email and Letter Closings In your closing, you should be polite and professional. In a hard copy, your written signature would be followed by your full name typed. If you have attached your business letter, your contact information is at the beginning, so you would just type your full name. In closing an email, your contact information should follow your full name. The following is an example that you can use to get ideas for what to write in your own thank you letter for an interview for a social work job. Thank You Letter for a Social Work Job Interview Example Your NameYour AddressYour City, State Zip CodeYour Phone NumberYour Email Date NameTitleOrganizationAddressCity, State Zip Code Dear Mr./Ms. Lastname: Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me regarding the position of Case Manager with your organization. The Helpful House offers a wonderful warm environment for those in need, and having met with you and some of your staff; I believe that my philosophy and experience would be an excellent match for the position. The Helpful House is unique among the facilities in this area, and I was impressed to see how beautifully it is run. Seeing first hand the difference you are making to the families who reside there gave me an even better understanding of your philosophy and how it is put into practice. It would be my pleasure to be a part of such a special organization, and I feel that I would be able to contribute there tremendously. As we discussed during our meeting, I was a Case Manager at a facility similar to yours when I was living in Boston several years ago. While there, I gained a fuller knowledge of the challenges that exist in the management of such a facility, and what an important role a Case Manager can play in helping things run smoothly. Tom Grey and Geri Brown do a wonderful job of overseeing the operation, and I look forward to meeting with them at their earliest convenience. Please let them know that I am very enthusiastic about this opportunity, and would be happy to meet with them as soon as possible. Again, I appreciate the time you took to speak with me and give me a tour. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Your Signature (hard copy letter) Your Typed Name

Millennials 5 secrets to working with millennials

Millennials 5 secrets to working with millennials Millennials 5 secrets to working with millennials Many leaders today face an important question: how can they build trust and inspire  millennials in their workplace? Here are some  suggestions for leadership tactics that address specific challenges  millennials face and will help everyone in an organization grow.Keep conference rooms free of cell phones It seems like something small and insignificant. The same can be said for brushing our teeth for two minutes. It is useless un-less we do it consistently.Every time we interact with each other at work, it is an opportunity to connect as human beings and slowly build trusting relationships. When we are on our phones before meetings, we take away opportunities to simply chat. Whether we talk about work, ask about each other’s week- ends . . . or even sit in silence together . . . we are doing little things that go a long way over time.If companies simply ban cellphones in all conference rooms, in time they will start to feel improvements in the quality of relationships their people e njoy.Encourage note-taking on paper instead of computers According to a study published in Psychological Science, those who take notes on paper are better at processing and retaining information. Though computer note takers may capture more data, those who use paper are forced to discern which information is more important. This learnable, practicable skill significantly impacts critical thinking and decision making. And for those who have to have notes captured digitally, then assign one person to take digital notes or simply transcribe the handwritten notes after the meeting.Teach leadership I visited a large bank and asked if they had a leadership training program. “We do,” the executive answered excitedly. When I probed for specific courses they teach, I was told they teach compliance. “That’s not leadership training,” I said, “that’s how to follow the law.” He continued to share more of the courses on offer, but there wasn’t a single class on actual leadership. How can we expect people to lead if we don’t teach them how to do it? The best companies I know have a robust curriculum to include human skills like effective confrontation, active listening and communication skills.  Teach how to give and receive feedback Many millennials in the workforce say they want more feedback. In practice, I’ve learned that what they seem to want is more positive feedback, more affirmation when they do well. Stories abound that too many of them aren’t actually that good at receiving negative feedback.Giving and receiving feedback are learnable, practicable skills. Getting better at giving feedback is not simply about giving more feedback, it’s learning how to give it, positive and negative.Similarly, receiving feedback is not simply about demanding feedback, it’s learning how to receive it, positive and negative, then knowing how to act on that feedback when it’s offered. There are many ways to do this. For example, our company has developed its own 360 review system. Once a year, each person on a team is asked to write down their top three strengths or areas they believe they’ve most improved and their three biggest weaknesses or areas they feel they need the most growth. Everyone’s answers are consolidated into one document and shared with every member of their team.We then take whatever time it takes- half a day or a full day, depending on the size of the team- to go through it all. Each person must first read their weaknesses. Then anyone who wants to can add to or comment on that list. At this time, the person sharing their list may not speak. They are prohibited from defending themselves or offering excuses. Their job is to listen. Immediately after, the person reads their strengths. And again, anyone else can add to or comment on the list. Again, the person being reviewed may only listen. At most, we allow clarifying questions. Someone takes responsibility to run the meeting to ensure that anything outside these p arameters is quickly shut down.It is an amazing experience. The most junior person on my team had the opportunity to tell me how I let her down and how I make her feel when I say or do certain things. It was completely eye-opening form, and it was empowering for her to feel heard. We don’t use this process as part of our formal evaluations but rather as a growth tool.We are all also members of smaller coaching pods that meet for an hour once a week or once every other week throughout the year to help each other build on what we learned in the review session.Take advantage of your millennials More companies would benefit directly by taking advantage of the unique skills and perspectives millennials bring to the table thanks to their upbringing. For example, millennials grew up on social media. They have literally spent their entire lives curating their personal brands. They intuitively understand how branding works. Take advantage of it!Instead of complaining that millennials arenâ €™t showing up or aren’t engaged, use them as a barometer of how you are doing as a leader or to gauge the kind of culture the company is building.Consider that older generations may not, in fact, be more engaged in their work (the data supports this), but rather that they are just better at faking it. Use the fact that millennials are more willing to speak out when they are feeling uninspired, disengaged or dissatisfied as an accurate accounting of how everyone in the company feels. If given something that inspires them to engage or stick around, millennials will fully engage for a long, long time.Excerpted from Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t, in agreement with Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House LLC. Two Future Engineers Challenge Winners Selected

Two Future Engineers Challenge Winners Selected Two Future Engineers Challenge Winners Selected Two Future Engineers Challenge Winners Selected Two students from California - eighth grader Ryan Beam and sixth grader Emily Takara - were selected earlier this month as the winners of the Future Engineers 3D Space Container Challenge, a competition that asked students between the ages of 5 and 19 to design 3D models of containers that could be used for various purposes in a microgravity environment. Now in its second year, the Future Engineers 3D Space Challenge series was created to inspire elementary, middle and high school students to become young innovators and engineers by enabling them to design 3D models that could potentially be manufactured in space. The ASME Foundation and NASA partnered series is hosted on FutureEngineers.org, a newly founded open innovation platform for K-12 student challenges. Ryan Beam, an eighth-grade student from Scotts Valley Middle School in Scotts Valley, Calif., was the grand prize winner in the Teen Category of the Future Engineers 3D Space Container Challenge. Beam's winning entry, ClipCatcher, was designed to enable astronauts to cut their nails without having the clippings disperse throughout the compartment. Photo of Ryan courtesy of Amy Beam. Beam, a 13-year old student at Scotts Valley Middle School in Scotts Valley, Calif., took top honors in the Challenges Teen Category with his entry, ClipCatch, a small rectangular device that helps solve a major problem that astronauts face when they clip their fingernails in space - namely, keeping the nail clippings from floating throughout the cabin. Using ClipCatch, an astronaut would simply insert a finger through a hole in one end of the container and place the fingernail clippers through a hole at the other end. Once cut, the nail clippings are trapped in the container. Beam will receive a trip to Los Angeles for a one-on-one tour of the Space Shuttle Endeavor with an astronaut and a VIP tour of Elon Musks SpaceX headquarters. Emily Takara, a sixth-grade student at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Cupertino, Calif., designed the Flower Tea Cage, a small, plastic sphere-shaped cage that astronauts could use to brew and drink tea in space. Takara was the winner of the competition's Junior Category. Photo of Emily courtesy of Corinne Takara. Emily Takara, an 11 year-old student at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Cupertino, was named the winner of the Junior Category, for students aged five to 12. For her entry, the Flower Tea Cage, Takara designed a hand-held, plastic sphere-shaped cage that astronauts could use to brew and drink tea in microgravity environments, where liquids naturally form spheres and adhere to other upon contact. Participating in the 3D Space Container challenge was both an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience for Takara, who won a 3D printer for her school as grand prize winner in the Junior Category. I really liked this Challenge, she said. It makes you think at a whole different level. I learned sometimes you have to abandon one design and take another path. I spent a lot of time working on one design. Then I changed my idea and started working on something very different. I was reluctant about changing my design because I had invested so much time into it. Once I got started on my new creation, I began to enjoy it and was having lots of fun. Six other finalists in the competition each received a scholarship to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. The finalists in the Teen Category were Heather Mercieca of Monrovia, Calif., for her entry ECOntainer mini-ecosystem for ants and plants; Geoffrey Thomas of Westford, Mass., for his entry Expandable Container for storage of trash or lunar materials; and Rajan Vivek of Scottsdale, Ariz., for his Hydroponic Plant Box, which would enable plants to be grown in space without soil. In the Junior Category, the three finalists were Sarah Daly of Columbia, Md., for her Fly Feeder 7.0 fruit fly keeper; William Van Dyke of Houston, Texas, for Space Terrarium V.4; and Vera Zavadskaya of Verona, N.J., for her Aquarius mixing canister. The judging panel for this years Future Engineers Challenge was comprised of Astronaut Nicole Stott; Niki Werkheiser, in-space manufacturing project manager at NASA; Sanjoy Som, systems engineer, Flight Systems Implementation Branch, NASA Ames Research; and Mike Snyder, chief engineer at Made In Space Inc. What to Expect from Military Basic Training

What to Expect from Military Basic Training What to Expect from Military Basic Training Some people go into military basic training in survival mode and have a tough time meeting the standards every day, while others embrace the training as a team player and leader among their peers. How do you do this?  Prepare yourself physically, and the mind will follow.  Learn how to be a good team player while in high school/college whether that is sports, band, or club activities. These are some of the valuable skills you can start learning now that will benefit you during your military journey.   Not Like a Civilian Job Regardless of what your recruiter told you, being a member of the United States Armed Forces is not just like having a civilian job. In the military, there will always be someone telling you what to do, when to do it, and how to do it and youve got to do it. Sometimes theyll tell you to do something that you dont want to do, or tell you in a way that makes you angry. Failing to do it is not an option. The willful disobeying of a lawful order wont just get you fired, as it would in a civilian occupation, it can get you sent to jail. In the military, youll work the hours you are told to work, youll work overtime with no additional pay, youll do the tasks youre assigned to do (even if they dont relate exactly with your job), youll live where youre told to live, and youll deploy where and when youre told to deploy. If youre not absolutely willing to make these sacrifices, then do yourself and the government a big favor and dont join. Realities of Boot Camp Military boot camp is like nothing youve ever experienced. However, the rigid routine and absolute control over every aspect of your life are several times worse than normal military duty, and thats by design. Its the job of the Training Instructors (T.I.s) and Drill Instructors (D.I.s) to either adjust your attitude to a military way of thinking (self-discipline, sacrifice, loyalty, obedience)  or to drum you out before the military spends too much money on your training. They do this by applying significant degrees of physical and mental stress, while at the same time teaching you the fundamentals of military rules; and the policies, etiquette, and customs of your particular military service. The training programs are scientifically and psychologically designed to disassemble the civilian and build from scratch a proud, physically fit, and dedicated member of the military. Results of Boot Camp Youll find that boot camp gets just a little bit easier each day. You may also find in the future that your military service was a major part of developing who you are, no matter the length of service. While it will help to get into shape and prepare yourself mentally before enlisting, you still may not be fully braced for all the military will throw at you during boot camp. How well you deal with unexpected challenges is just one more way the armed services separate the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines from those who arent suited to serve.
